Camping / FIELD GUIDE

Make a rainy camping weekend easier to manage

Keep wet and dry gear separate and set realistic limits for the conditions.

01

Choose the trip you can comfortably support

Review the forecast, land-manager notices, and your group’s experience before leaving. Think about access roads and the ability to change plans. If conditions exceed your equipment or experience, changing the dates or destination is a useful decision rather than a failed weekend.

02

Practice the shelter sequence

Know the tent’s complete setup process and the gear you need to finish it. Keep the instructions accessible and small parts organized. Review the maker’s ventilation and care guidance rather than inventing a new pitch because it is raining.

03

Create a wet-gear boundary

Decide where rainwear, muddy footwear, and damp equipment will go. Protect the sleeping system and dry layers in suitable containers. Keep the doorway organized so water and dirty gear are not carried through the sleeping space every time someone enters.

04

Keep meals and downtime simple

Choose meals and activities that do not require an elaborate outdoor arrangement. Never move a fuel-burning stove into a tent or other enclosed space to escape the rain. Use the equipment only as its manufacturer allows and change the plan if you cannot do so comfortably.

05

Finish the trip at home

Unpack wet equipment promptly and dry it fully according to the maker’s instructions. Check small corners, bags, and straps before storage. Record what kept working and which part of the routine caused friction, then improve that one part for the next trip.
